GambleAware GB Maps - Local Authorities

Using data collected as part of the Annual Great Britain Treatment and Support Survey, GambleAware has worked with Oliver O'Brien at University College London to produce maps of Great Britain which show gambling harms prevalence in each local authority and parliamentary constituency area, as well as usage of and reported demand for treatment and support for gambling harms. In addition a map showing Index of Multiple deprivation (IMD) across GB has been created to compare against gambling prevalence, as well as a map showing where National Gambling Treatment Service providers operate and their contact information.

Data

The data used to produce the maps was collected by YouGov as part of the Annual Great Britain Treatment and Support Survey commissioned by GambleAware. GambleAware has worked with Oliver O’Brien from University College London who has created three maps of Great Britain showing the following:

  • Map 1 - Gambling prevalence based on Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) scores at a local authority and parliamentary constituency level.
  • Map 2 - Reported usage of treatment and support for gambling harms at local authority and parliamentary constituency level and reported demand for treatment and support for gambling harms at local authority and parliamentary constituency level (i.e. the treatment and support people say they would like to access).
  • Map 3 - Relative usage and reported demand for treatment and support based on PGSI scores (i.e where there is more or less usage and reported demand for treatment and support based on PGSI categories).
  • Map 4 – Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) at a local authority and parliamentary constituency level.
  • Map 5 – National Gambling Treatment Service (NGTS) service provision at local authority level.

The maps have been created by grouping the data into five equal categories known as quintiles. This means that a scale has been created to show the quintile with the lowest prevalence, usage of, and reported demand for treatment and support through to the quintile with the highest prevalence within each local authority and parliamentary constituencies in England, Scotland and Wales.

The data was collected at the end of 2021 and a note on the data analysis and methodology used can be found hereIt is important to note that this analysis produces rough estimates only. The data modelling is not intended to produce an accurate figure for each locality, but rather to give indicative estimates that then provide a sense of how prevalence and usage/demand is spread across the country in relative terms.

How to use the maps

Map 1 – Gambling prevalence based on PGSI scores

Use this map to look at PGSI scores across GB in each PGSI category (0 = non-problem gamblers; 1-2 = low risk gamblers; 3-7 = moderate-risk gamblers; 8+ = problem gamblers) with the option to switch between local authority and parliamentary constituency level.

Click on top right button of the map to select your preferred view (one view at a time).

Choose whether to show location labels (toggle on/off) and / or high built up areas

Click on the top left button to zoom in and out to take a closer look at a specific area (or use the zoom function on your device).

Map 2 – Reported demand for and usage of treatment and support

Use this map to look at reported demand and reported usage of treatment and support in each PGSI category (1-2 = low risk gamblers; 3-7 = moderate-risk gamblers; 8+ = problem gamblers) at either local authority or parliamentary constituency.

Click on top right button of the map to select your preferred view (one view at a time).

Choose whether to show location labels (toggle on/off) and / or high built up areas

Click on the top left button to zoom in and out to take a closer look at a specific area (or use the zoom function on your device).

Map 3 – Relative usage and reported demand for treatment and support based on PGSI scores

Use this map to look at relative usage and reported demand for treatment and support in each PGSI category (1-2 = low risk gamblers; 3-7 = moderate-risk gamblers; 8+ = problem gamblers) at either local authority or parliamentary constituency level.

Click on top right button of the map to select your preferred view (one view at a time).

Map 4 – Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) calculated at local authority and parliamentary constituency level

Use this map to look at IMD at either local authority or parliamentary constituency level.

Click on top right button of the map to select your preferred view (one view at a time).

Choose whether to show location labels (toggle on/off) and / or high built up areas

Click on the top left button to zoom in and out to take a closer look at a specific area (or use the zoom function on your device).

Map 5: NGTS service provision at local authority level.

Use this map to find out which NGTS service providers are available within each local authority level.

Hover over the local authority and click on the service provider to find out how to contact the service.

These maps represent a starting point in understanding some of the differences at local authority and parliamentary constituency level. It is anticipated that they will be useful to national and local public health teams and healthcare commissioners in building their understanding of gambling in their local authority area.
